Backup Solutions for Home PC head

Introduction to Backing up

Imagine losing all your photos, documents, and important files due to a hard drive crash or a virus attack. This is where the need for an effective backup solution arises. Backing up your home PC is not just a good practice; it’s essential. In the following sections, we’ll explore the various options and strategies for securing your valuable data.

The Significance of PC Backup

Why is PC backup so crucial? Well, data loss can occur due to various reasons, including hardware failures, accidental deletions, malware, or even natural disasters. By regularly backing up your data, you create a safety net, ensuring that your files are protected and can be easily restored in case of an unforeseen event.

Types of Backup Solutions for your Home PC

External Hard Drives

External hard drives are a traditional but effective way to back up your PC. They provide ample storage space and allow you to create local backups. However, they are vulnerable to physical damage or theft. Of course, your computer has to be on to back up, too. Also you have to be disciplined, unless its an automatic back up, you will need to start the back up. Also large memory sticks can be used for backing up – get a size to suit the size of your data.

Backup Solutions for Home PC External hard drive

Cloud Backup Services

Cloud backup services, like Microsoft Onedrive or Google Drive, offer secure and accessible storage. Your data is stored offsite, making it less vulnerable to physical damage, and you can access it from anywhere with an internet connection. Onedrive for instance, is automatic, it’ll keep backing up your data as long as you have space. If you have a Microsoft 365 subscription you get a lot of space – 1TB to be precise. The free Onedrive storage limit is 5gb.

Also, if you are an Amazon Prime member you already have Amazon photos. This is a app for your phone and desktop which will automatically back up your photos.

But, whatever you choose, don’t forget to make a note of your username and password for the cloud service! Your current computer will remember it but your next computer won’t, so write it in a little book and hide the book away.

Network Attached Storage (NAS)

NAS devices are like your personal cloud at home. They offer large storage capacity and the flexibility to access your data on your local network. It’s a great solution for those who want control over their data. And once again, this type of backup solution also requires a username and password, so write it down in a little book.

Backup Solutions for Home PC - Nas

Software Backup Solutions for your Home PC

Using backup software simplifies the process of creating, scheduling, and managing backups. Several software options are available, with features like automatic backups and version history. In the control panel in Windows 10/11 you will find an icon, Back up and restore, which does a fine job. You’ll notice the brackets next to the words Back up and restore, the brackets say Windows 7 – that’s how long this back up solution has been around for.

Back up and restore

But with a few limitations – like have to clear off older backups after a while and the fact you need to check the drive occasionally to make sure it is running, it does a great job at backing up your data.

Setting Up Your Backup

Begin by selecting your backup destination, whether it’s an external hard drive, a cloud service, or a NAS. Once chosen, configure your backup software to start the backup process. Most services of the Backblaze ilk have their own software, which is straight forward and easy to set up.

Creating a Backup Schedule

Consistency is key. Set up a regular backup schedule to ensure your data is continuously protected. Daily or weekly backups can be tailored to your needs.

Incremental vs. Full Backups

Choose between incremental and full backups. Incremental backups save only the changes made since the last backup, conserving storage space. Full backups are complete copies of your data. Both types will need clearing off the older ones occasionally so it doesn’t fill up the drive.

The 3-2-1 Backup Rule

Following the 3-2-1 backup rule ensures redundancy and reliability. Keep three copies of your data, store them in two different formats, and have one offsite copy.

321 back up strategy

Restoring Your Data

In case of data loss, knowing how to restore your data is crucial. Most backup solutions provide easy-to-use tools for recovering your files. Note that online back ups may take longer to restore – it depends on the speed of your internet connection as to how fast you can download your data to restore it.

Securing Your Backups

Your backups should be as secure as your original data. Use encryption and strong passwords to protect your backup files from unauthorized access if, indeed, that is a worry. But write the password down in your password book. You can’t rely on your computer to remember it. Strangely enough, a fair percentage of work I do each week is password recovery and I can’t always recover the password. If you haven’t set up the password recovery options when setting up the account it can be impossible to recover in certain situations.

Best Practices for Home PC Backup

Adopting best practices, such as regular testing of your backups and verifying the integrity of your stored data, will help ensure a smooth recovery process. In the first place, check your back ups every few weeks to ensure the backups are being done successfully.

Comparing Popular Backup Solutions for your Home PC

Carbonite

Carbonite is a cloud-based backup service known for its user-friendly interface and unlimited backup storage plans.

Backblaze

Backblaze offers a cost-effective cloud backup solution with a focus on simplicity and security. I have several customers who use backblaze and have deen very happy with it.

Acronis True Image

Even though they now call it Acronis cyber protect, most people know it as Acronis True Image. It combines local and cloud backup options with powerful features for data protection. Indeed, I personally use Acronis for copying entire hard drives and have done for over 10 years – it’s a great system for that.

Conclusion

In the digital age, data loss is a real threat, and securing your home PC data is paramount. By following the right backup practices and choosing the best solution for your needs, you can safeguard your valuable files and memories from potential loss or damage.

Personally, I have a NAS, Amazon photos, one drive and cloned drives to back up my data. My motto is plan for the worst and it will never happen!

FAQs

What is the best backup solution for a home PC?

The best backup solution depends on your specific needs, but popular options include cloud services like Carbonite and Backblaze or Onedrive if you have a Microsoft 365 account, as well as using an external hard drive or NAS for local backups.

How often should I back up my home PC?

It’s advisable to back up your PC regularly, with daily or weekly backups being common choices. The frequency should match the importance of the data and your tolerance for potential data loss. If you do a lot of work on a particular day, back it up there and then if you can’t afford to lose it. Of course, if you have an automatic back up solution, it’s done for you, automatically with no fuss.

Are cloud backup services secure?

Indeed, most reputable cloud backup services use encryption and security measures to protect your data. However, it’s essential to use strong, unique passwords (Password123 will not do!) and enable two-factor authentication for added security.

The 3-2-1 backup rule involves keeping three copies of your data, in two different formats, with one copy stored offsite. This rule ensures redundancy and safeguards your data from various threats. It might be a case of backing up to an external drive as well as keeping it on your computer and also putting your most precious data on a memory stick and giving it to a friend or family member.

How can I optimize my backup performance?

To optimize backup performance, consider your backup schedule, the size of your backups, and the speed of your internet connection. Ensure that your backup solution’s settings align with your preferences and needs.

Protect your digital life and never fear data loss again with the right backup solution for your home PC.

Blink Camera System Testing and Use

Blink Camera System Testing and Use

Call 07771 588577 or email us.

This is my own Blink Camera System Testing and Use in the real world. Home security is a top priority for many homeowners. With the rise of smart home technology, it’s now easier than ever to keep your home safe and secure. Indeed, one of the best ways to do this is by setting up a home CCTV and smart camera system. In this blog post, we’ll take you through everything you need to know about setting up your own home security system using CCTV and smart cameras.

There are a lot of Camera systems to choose from and I’m no expert in all the various systems. However, two that I have had experience with are Dlink and now Blink. I’ve recently upgraded all my cameras from Dlink to the Blink system. Below is a brief overview of each camera system and a video showing the camera systems with both day and night video. I’ve used screenshots from the video as stills so the quality in the still photos is not representative of the video quality. See the video below for a true representation of the quality of the video.

I am now using the Blink System of cameras for my home security and I really like them. The pictures are a lot better quality than my old Dlink system but part of that is the march of time. I’ve had my old camera system for about 8 years and, of course, technology moves on. And Not to mention, the modern blink system’s ease of use.

Why is it important to have smart cameras?

Home security smart camera systems are important for several reasons. They can, of course, help deter burglars by making them wary of properties with visible security cameras. If a crime does occur, security cameras can help gather evidence and provide police with helpful footage. Smart home security systems boast several significant advantages over traditional models, such as real-time alerts, motion detection, video surveillance and analytics, and fire and life safety protection. They can also help monitor your kids, check on the elderly, and supervise your pets. In addition to the interactive services offered by home security system companies, there are now even more home automation services being offered as well.

The Blink System

Firstly, Blink camera systems are an excellent value for the money and performed well in test website ratings. Secondly, the Blink Outdoor camera and Doorbell camera is weatherproof, offers 1080p video, and works with Alexa voice commands and IFTTT applets2. Thirdly, with all Blink cameras, you get two-way audio, high definition day and night video, customized motion detection alerts, and customizable activity and privacy zones. Blink cameras are great for renters and home owners alike because of the price and the fact that they don’t require any wires or difficult setup.

Blink Doorbell

The Blink doorbell system also has several advantages over its competitors. It is cheaper than other doorbell cameras like Ring. It has a long battery life and can work on both wired and battery power. The Blink Video Doorbell can be paired with a Sync Module and Blink Subscription Plan to start Live View sessions in the Blink app and save them to cloud storage, use clip roll editing, see clips faster with rapid viewing, receive daily photo capture clips, use more convenient in-app sharing, and access future features.

Blink Doorbell unboxed

The Blink Doorbell is a great addition to my home security setup. As well as providing a motion sensor to my front garden it also notifies me when there is someone at my door. Additionally, Blink minis around the house play a tune to let me know somebody is at the door. Indeed, If you have blink minis, you don’t need the chime part of the doorbell, the minis act as the chime. You also get a notification to your phone through the blink app that someone is at your door. if you need a step by step guide on how to set up your Blink door bell, see How to set up a Blink Video Doorbell.

An actual recording in a real world scenario, me coming home.

Blink Mini

The Blink Mini is a home security camera that is very affordable and easy to set up and use. It is a compact indoor plug-in smart security camera that records video in 1080p resolution, allows for two-way audio chat from the smartphone app to the camera, and it can alert your phone when it detects activity in one of your configured activity zones.

There are many things I like about the Blink mini cameras but one of the big pluses is how small they are. See the photo below for just how small they are. They sit unobtrusively on the side in a position not being offensive. You hardly notice them when looking around the room. I’ve used them to cover all entry doors as well as the main rooms. Also, If you need a step-by-step guide on setting up a blink mini see Add a Camera to the Blink System

Indeed, you actually forget they are there. As mentioned earlier, the image below is from a screenshot, for the full quality, see the video.

Blink Mini

Blink Outdoor

Blink Outdoor Camera

I have found these to be a great way of seeing the wildlife in the garden. They are lithium battery-operated cameras. The batteries, for me last about 9 months with my usage. And, of course, the blink outdoor is the same setup as the Blink mini. See Add a Camera to the Blink System. Also, all the cameras mentioned need a Blink Sync module – Installation Guide. Happily you only need 1 module for all the cameras.

Blink Camera System Testing and Use

Firstly, I’ve found them very easy to set up and use. Secondly, the video quality is excellent from such a small and relatively cheap unit. Thirdly, I love the ability to be able to review all the footage on my phone.

Setting up a WiFi Mesh System

Setting up a WiFi Mesh System

Installing a WiFi Mesh System doesn’t have to be difficult. Let me talk you through how to do it. I’m using the TP-Link Deco system to do it and thoroughly recommend them. It’s what I have in my own house. If you have a large area to cover with wifi or many dead spots, indeed, a wifi mesh system may be for you. Mesh systems have faster speeds, greater coverage, and a much more reliable connection due to their multiple access points.

How it works;-

Setting up a WiFi Mesh System
TP-Link Wifi Mesh System – Setting up a WiFi Mesh System

Setting up a WiFi Mesh System – the advantages

With a Mesh WiFi router, you can skip signing into a new network every time you go upstairs or to a different point in the house and stay connected to a single network no matter where you are. Mesh technology is smart and intuitive, letting you stay online even if one of your mesh nodes fails.

Furthermore, by having multiple access points like the one below, a mesh system eliminates dead spots and makes for a much more reliable connection. Of course, near seamless connection from one node to the next makes it the best choice for reliable and fast home networking.

One unit links to the modem, and then that unit then becomes the main hub. The other units called “nodes” will repeat the router’s signal. The result is an efficient wireless network that provides a strong signal no matter where you are. Indeed, below is what one of the mesh nodes looks like.

Wifi Mesh deco
Deco wifi mesh system

You can read all about it here at tp-link mesh systems. And, surprisingly, they are easy to set up.

Setting up a mesh WiFi system at home is relatively simple and can be done in a few steps:

  1. Choose the right system: First, you’ll need to choose a mesh WiFi system that meets your needs. Consider factors such as the size of your home, the number of devices you have, and your internet speed.
  2. Place the nodes: Next, you’ll need to place the nodes throughout your home. The main node should be connected to your modem and placed in a central location. The other nodes should be placed in areas where you want to improve WiFi coverage.
  3. Set up the network: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to set up the network. This usually involves downloading an app and following the on-screen instructions to configure the network.
  4. Connect your devices: Once the network is set up, you can connect your devices to the new mesh WiFi network. You should now have fast and reliable internet throughout your home.

The Deco App

Of course, as with everything these days, there is an app for everything. This is installed on your smartphone or similar, and allows you to control the network, gives you reports and allows you to set various options like ssid’s (Network Names) and parental controls.

Installing a WiFi Mesh System - Deco

Above is the loading screen of the Deco app. This then, after set up, takes you to the main screen below.

Screenshot of Front page

Guest Network – Setting up a WiFi Mesh System

Here it shows the networks you have. I have a Home network and one for guests. These are configurable and you don’t have to have a guest network if you don’t want one. Pressing the circular globe at the top lists all the deco nodes in the network.

Deco Device list

Clicking on one of the devices gives you upload and download speeds, network information, and, of course, a list of connected devices.

single deco device list

The ‘more’ settings button brings up this. With the installs I do for my customers they get a choice, I can manage the network, or they can. And I provide instruction and a guided tour of how they can do it.

Settings options in Deco App

Of Course, if it all looks a little complicated, I can come and do it for you.

Conclusion – Setting up a WiFi Mesh System

Setting up your own mesh WiFi system at home has many advantages. Some of the main advantages include:
Better coverage: Mesh systems use multiple nodes placed throughout your home to provide better coverage and eliminate the need for range extenders. This means that you can enjoy fast and reliable internet in every room of your house.
Easy network management: Mesh routers, of course, come with easy network setup and management, allowing you to toggle network settings, check speeds, and enact parental controls.
Streamlined connections: Mesh systems use multiple nodes to provide better coverage and eliminate the need for range extenders. This means that you can move around your home without experiencing any interruption in your WiFi connection.
Tight security: Indeed, along with easy management, mesh routers often come with improved security features.
No single point of failure: Mesh networks have no main access point and can remain active even if one node fails.
A single network: Mesh systems maintain a single network connection throughout the home, intelligently connecting devices to the best node.
Modular design: Mesh networks can be easily expanded or reduced by adding or removing nodes.

These advantages make setting up your own mesh WiFi system at home a great choice for households that want fast and reliable internet throughout their home.

For a full and detailed explanation of the above conclusion see The Advantages of a Mesh Wifi System at Home

The Advantages of a Mesh WiFi System at Home

The Advantages of a Mesh WiFi System at Home

Are you tired of dealing with spotty WiFi coverage and slow internet speeds in your home? A mesh WiFi system may be the solution you’ve been looking for. Unlike traditional routers that broadcast a signal from a single point, mesh systems use multiple nodes placed throughout your home to create a seamless and reliable network. In this blog post, we’ll explore the many advantages of using a mesh WiFi system at home, including easy network management, streamlined connections, tight security, and more. So if you’re ready to say goodbye to frustrating WiFi dead zones and hello to fast and reliable internet, read on!

TP Link Wifi Mesh System
TP Link Wifi Mesh System

What is a Mesh Wifi sysytem and what is it used for?

A mesh WiFi system is a type of home network that uses multiple devices, or nodes, to create a seamless and reliable wireless network. Unlike traditional routers that broadcast a signal from a single point, mesh systems use multiple nodes placed throughout your home to provide better coverage and eliminate the need for range extenders. The nodes connect directly and dynamically to each other and cooperate to route data efficiently and ensure uninterrupted network connectivity. The nodes share the same SSID and password, so users don’t have to switch networks as they move around. This allows for seamless roaming throughout your home without experiencing any interruption in your WiFi connection.

Some of the advantages of a Mesh Wifi Network.

Easy Network Management

Easy network management is an important feature of mesh WiFi systems. One of the main benefits of mesh routers compared to traditional routers is the easy network access and management they provide 1Most mesh routers on the market today come with easy network setup and management, allowing you to toggle network settings, check speeds, and enact parental controls 2. Mesh platforms are built, marketed, and maintained with non-techie people in mind. The menus are clearly labeled, the options and toggles are presented in plain English to help you control your network 3. This makes it easy for users to set up and manage their home network without needing advanced technical knowledge.

Screenshot of the Settings options in Deco App

Streamlined connections

Streamlined connections are an advantage of mesh WiFi systems. With traditional routers, range extenders are often used to repeat the signal so a Wi-Fi connection can reach even further. Mesh systems use multiple nodes to provide better coverage and eliminate the need for range extenders 1. A mesh-router system doesn’t require constant reconnection as a traditional router would. Mesh systems help you avoid lags in your connection 2. This means that you can move around your home without experiencing any interruption in your WiFi connection.

Tight Security

Tight security is an advantage of mesh WiFi systems. Along with easy management, mesh routers often come with improved security features 1. Many mesh routers automatically check for and install firmware updates, which helps keep your devices safe 2. This means that security flaws can be patched across your entire network without much intervention from you 2. This is not the case if you have a router and multiple extenders to maintain, where you would have to update the firmware on each device individually 2.

Better Coverage

Better coverage is one of the main advantages of a mesh WiFi system. With a traditional router, you are relying on a single device to broadcast a signal throughout your entire home. This can result in dead zones where the signal is weak or non-existent. Mesh systems use multiple nodes placed throughout your home to create a seamless and reliable network 1. Placing nodes throughout your home provides better overall coverage with less signal drop 1. This, of course, means that you can enjoy fast and reliable internet in every room of your house.

No single point of failure

No single point of failure is an advantage of mesh WiFi systems. In a mesh network, there is no main access point. All nodes are alike and while you’ll still need the one connected to the broadband connection to keep working properly for internet access, the network will remain active regardless 1. This means that if one node fails, the rest of the nodes can still communicate with each other and provide internet access. As you would expect, this provides an added level of reliability and redundancy to your home network.

A single network

Mesh systems maintain a single network connection throughout the home, intelligently connecting devices to the best node. This means that all nodes share the same SSID and password, so users don’t have to switch networks as they move around 1. The nodes connect directly and dynamically to each other and cooperate to route data efficiently and ensure uninterrupted network connectivity 1. Indeed, this allows for seamless roaming throughout your home without experiencing any interruption in your WiFi connection.

Modular Design

Mesh networks can be easily expanded or reduced by adding or removing nodes. This makes the network extremely adaptable and expandable as more or less coverage is needed 1. Adding a node to the network is often a simple procedure 2. This means that you can easily add new technology to any room in your home temporarily because of the speed at which the system operates 3. This allows you to customize your home network to meet your specific needs and provides a high level of flexibility.

In Conclusion – The Advantages of a Mesh WiFi System at Home

A mesh WiFi system at home has many advantages and may be a good choice for some households. Some of the main advantages include:

  1. Easy Network Management: One main feature that distinguishes mesh routers from traditional routers is the easy network access they provide 1.
  2. Streamlined connections: With traditional routers, range extenders are often used to repeat the signal so a Wi-Fi connection can reach even further. Mesh systems use multiple nodes to provide better coverage and eliminate the need for range extenders 1.
  3. Tight security: Along with easy management, mesh routers often come with improved security 1.
  4. Better coverage: One of the main positives to a mesh Wi-Fi system is better coverage throughout your home. You’re no longer relying on a router in one spot broadcasting signal throughout the entire building, but instead, a network of nodes all working together 2.
  5. No single point of failure: There is no main access point in a mesh network. All nodes are alike, and while you’ll still need the one connected to the broadband connection to keep working properly for internet access, the network will remain active regardless 2.
  6. A single network: Mesh networks maintain a single SSID and connection throughout, intelligently connecting you to the best node 2.
  7. Modular: A mesh network can be as big or small as you wish. Because each node is just a single module in the overall network, you can always add or take them away as is necessary 2.

These advantages make mesh WiFi systems a great choice for households that want fast and reliable internet throughout their home.

I would like to thank RHCC for all their help with my computer. When I had a problem they were quick, courteous and extremely helpful, managing to restore all my data without loss and provide advice on the purchase of a new machine.
Being a single female, I am always a little wary of inviting strangers into my home, but I had nothing to worry about here, and the gentleman that visited always spoke in plain and simple English to me, so as not to confuse with computer jargon that I really do not understand.

Add a Camera to the Blink System

Add a Camera to the Blink System

This is a how to add a camera to the blink system. You will need to have installed a Sync Module first. See How to Install a Blink Sync Module. Once that’s done, you’re ready to install a camera. I’m using a Blink Mini but the procedure is the same for the other types of cameras.

I’ve created a video of the whole procedure and below that is a step-by-step guide in words and pictures.

Firstly, open the Blink app on your phone. and press the + icon on the top right of the home section

The above picture shows the removal of the base ring exposing the mounting screw holes. The camera is supplied with 2 screws but no rawl plugs – you’ll have to supply your own. I’m really pleased with the cameras and they give a lot better picture than my old Dlink system while being substantially smaller too. Of Course, technology moves on!

And then we are done! Next, it is mounting the doorbell which gives some great detailed descriptions of how to do it. Also, how to cap off an old wired doorbell if you are replacing one of those.

mounting a blink doorbell

There are some options you may wish to consider in the settings. Go into the doorbell settings. These are found opposite your doorbell name. Then click on zones and from here you can mask off any unwanted zones in which activity is detected. So for instance, for a plant that moves in the wind or something similar, you can gray out the squares and motion will not be detected in the greyed-out square.

On mine, I have greyed out the sky from detection and a hanging basket by the front door. As you can see, all pretty straightforward!

Windows 8.1 is nearing the end of support – August 22

Windows 8.1 is nearing the end of its support. If you own a Windows 8.1 machine you have probably seen this;

this version of windows is nearing the end of support
Windows 8.1 is nearing the end of support

January 10, 2023, is the last day Microsoft will offer security updates and technical support for PCs that run Windows 8.1. We are reaching out now to thank you for your loyalty and help you prepare for what’s next.

What does this mean?

The reason Microsoft is doing this is to make people aware that the Windows 8.1 operating system will reach the end of its life in January 2023. That means the computer will still function but you will no longer receive the important security updates.

What can I do?

Your options are to upgrade to Windows 10 or Windows 11 for free. Windows 10 end of life is not until 2025. You can upgrade to Windows 11 if your computer is capable of handling it. To find out more about windows 11 see my  First Look at Windows 11. To find out if your Windows 8.1 computer is compatible with Windows 11 see here. However, the chances are it isn’t compatible as it won’t have a supported processor or the TPM.

Windows 8.1 is nearing the end of support.

So the options are, in 90% of cases either to upgrade to windows 10 or buy a new PC. If you are not sure what to do feel free to contact me to discuss your options. I’ll update this page as more information comes to light.
