Compatibility Tool For Windows 11

Compatibility Tool For Windows 11

The Compatibility Tool For Windows 11 is finally back. If you have been reading these posts in order you will know that when I posted here on the 14th of September the Compatibility Tool For Windows 11 had been removed because it was unreliable. The Compatibility Tool For Windows 11 is now back on Microsoft’s page here. Let’s walk you through it…

Click on the banner on the page above (it’s at the bottom of that Microsoft page) to initiate the download. Once it has downloaded, run the program and you are faced with the screen below

Compatibility Tool For Windows 11

All you have to do is click on the check now button underneath the words ‘Introducing Windows 11’.  There is no need to sign in with Microsoft as it suggests. You’ll only get that message if you are running a local account on your computer and not one where you have to sign in with your Microsoft username and password. Click the check now button and your results will be displayed after a short pause.

Compatibility Tool For Windows 11 – Results

Compatibility Tool For Windows 11

As you can see, the PC I’m writing this on isn’t compatible with several things. The secure boot on this PC I have turned off but it would be easy to turn it back on again in the bios. The TPM is the thing I don’t have. For a full explanation of the TPM see my earlier post about it here. Also, the processor isn’t new enough. The latest processors are 11th generation, mine is only generation 3 (almost antique in computer terms). If you click on the ‘see all results’ button it will show you what is right with your computer in Windows 11 eyes. The initial results only show you what is wrong.

Compatibility Tool For Windows 11 – Different Opinions

As an aside, I had a chat with an employee at Currys/PC World today about this. The first chap I spoke to couldn’t tell me if the laptop I was looking at had a TPM in it! All the display machines can’t run the ‘TPM.MSC@ command to check as you need administrator rights to run it. The second chap was under the impression that on the day of release the requirements for running Windows 11 will be magically dropped to allow it to run on PCs that don’t meet these requirements. I am extremely dubious of this, to say the least… Anyway back to the Compatibility Tool For Windows 11

Compatibility Tool For Windows 11

What is right about the PC – Compatibility Tool For Windows 11

This tells you the minimum specs – at least 4GB of RAM, well, no problem there. At least 64GB of disk space. Personally, I’d want at least 128GB just to run windows and deal with all the future updates. I see many disappointed people who have bought laptops with 32GB of storage that struggles to have enough room to run Windows 10!

If you are going to buy a new PC to run Windows 11, make sure it has enough disk space or at least the option to have more storage added. There is a range of cheap laptops out there with ‘eMMC’ storage. The E stands for embedded, it is soldered directly onto the motherboard and more often than not cannot be upgraded. Some of the cheap windows 10 laptops only have 32GB eMMC storage so will not run windows 11.

Clicking on the last box ‘ Device Specifications’ is nothing to get excited about, it just takes you to the notice below.

But, when you run it on a compatible machine, you get this.

Compatibility Tool For Windows 11

Conclusions

So there you have it, the Compatibility Tool For Windows 11 is now been released. As I write this on the 3rd of October 2021 with the Windows 11 release only 2 days away. I wonder how it will go for Microsoft. If they follow the usual pattern of releases, in my humble opinion it’ll be a duffer. I hope I’m wrong as running native Android phone apps on my PC is something I’d like, but we’ll have to wait and see. If you are an early adopter you’ll go for it anyway. But, I think most of my customers will be like the chap I was talking to the other day ‘I’ll give it a year and let other people iron out all the bugs’ wise words methinks…

Windows 11 Release Date

Windows 11 Release Date

So, we have a date, the Windows 11 Release Date is October 5th 2021. For other bits of windows 11 I have covered, see Windows 11 and Windows 11 news so far. Microsoft still seems to be looking at the TPM ( mentioned in Windows 11 news so far ). But the news is it will be a free update on compatible devices. But with the Microsoft compatibility checker not working at the time of writing, it’s a bit difficult to know if your machine will be compatible.

That said, early adopters will go for it as soon as they can but if you are not desperate, I’d say hang fire for a while and let other people work out the bugs first.

The video below, from the Microsoft youtube channel, doesn’t really tell us much. As will all advertising these days, it’s heavy on selling you a lifestyle but for specifics of Windows 11, you’ll have to dig a bit deeper.

I’ve added a link below to the 2021 Microsoft Windows event. It’s 44 minutes long and it’s a heavy sell. I’ve been around in computing for a while now and while all new windows operating systems are released with heavy fanfare, but only time will tell if they are any good. Obviously, some people are resistant to change. Some, of course, embrace change. But there have been notable successes and some notable duffers. Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows 10 have proved very popular. Indeed, Windows Vista and Windows 8 were not universally loved to say the least.

Windows 11 Release Date – Will it be any good?

Will Windows 11 be any good? Really, the only way is to try it. Some will love it and some will hate it. Some won’t change because their brother’s aunties dog tried it and didn’t like it. But ultimately, it is what works for you and what you find comfortable to work with.

Windows 11 – News So Far

Windows 11 – News So Far

A few bits of news scoured from around the web about Windows 11 – News So Far. This follows on from my original article about Windows 11

Well, there used to be a download from Microsoft, called the Windows 11 compatibility tool. Microsoft launched the tool to help see if your PC was compatible with Windows 11 but they have since pulled it from use after complaints that it was inaccurate. They are promising a new tool and it should be available here when it comes.

Windows 11 and TPM

Some older PCs will not be able to run windows 11. This one I’m typing on will not be able to run it due to not having a TPM chip (Trusted Platform Module 2.0). Yeah, what’s that? I didn’t know either so I looked it up. The TPM chip, it turns out, is a good thing to have! It stores login information that is, allegedly, impossible to hack. Checking to see if you have this is not straightforward.

Press the Windows and R keys together

This brings up this box below,

Type in the box tpm.msc

tpm check -Windows 11 - News So Far
TPM check

Then press ok.

Another box will appear

tpm check 2 Windows 11 - News So Far
tpm check 2

TPM is not found?

This is the box you will get if you have no TPM chip or the TPM is not found. Confusingly, this is also the box you will get if you have the TPM turned off in the BIOS. To check this you need to restart your PC and get into the UEFI BIOS settings. This process is different on every PC so refer to your documentation or the manufacturer’s website.. Common ways to get into it are pressing F2 or Del key when the computer starts up. Look through all the settings in the bios to see whether there is a reference to TPM or Trusted Platform Support and enable it.

There, told you it wasn’t straightforward.

If you do have one, you’ll get this box;

TPM OK Windows 11 - News So Far
TPM OK

If you get this box it is one of the signs that Windows 11 can run on your PC but until Microsoft release their tool again, you won’t know if you can run the rest. Keep Checking the Windows 11 website for when it is released again. You can click on the picture below which will take you to the website.

Windows 11 ???

Windows 11 (and what is known so far)

Windows 11 (and what we know so far) is of course, subject to change, but this is what Microsoft has said so far. It will available around Christmas 2021. You will be able to upgrade for free, from Windows 10.

Windows 11 Home screen
Windows 11 home screen

The full-page where these pictures are from can be found at the Microsoft site, here   New Windows 11 OS | Microsoft. Of course, Microsoft are telling you on this page how wonderful it is. Of course, they are the ones trying to hawk it! But the free upgrade may appeal to some. I have heard that Windows 10 will no longer be supported from 2025 which fits in line with other operating system timelines.

Personally, I am a little disappointed Microsoft were not able to hold to the detail they mentioned when Windows 10 came out – they said it would be the last operating system they release and they would just release updates for it.

How good will Windows 11 be?

Only time will tell. Microsoft in the past have tended to release a good operating system, then a duff one in my opinion. Windows 98, good, Windows 2000? A bit of a duffer. The Same with Windows XP, good, then they followed it up with Vista. The same with Windows 7! Good, and then Windows 8 was released…  Will 11 follow the same pattern?

Should I change?

The industry tends to wait a year before even considering an upgrade. I’ll have it from the word go but I’ll still be running windows 10 on my workshop computers as it’s proved itself to be reliable. As human beings, the older we get the less we like change. Many people will be resistant to it because it is different

Windows 11 logo

System requirements

The minimum system requirements are below, but if you only just meet the requirements, consider upgrading your hardware as it will probably run like a dog on some older machines out there. I consider an I3 or equivalent, 8GB RAM and an SSD to be minimum requirements for windows 10, so we can probably think along those lines.

Windows 11 requirements
Windows 11 requirements

Of course, everything I’ve said above can be taken with a pinch of salt. Until it is released, we won’t know what we are getting!

How do I speed up my machine? By adding an SSD

How do I speed up my machine? By adding an SSD

How do I speed up my Machine? is a question I am often asked. Sometimes, in the first place, it just needs a cleanup. Also, sometimes it might be a mechanical issue, it all depends. However, there is one thing you can do to speed up your machine which will give it the single biggest speed increase I know and that is to put a solid-state hard drive inside.

 Email us     07771 588577     Whatsapp

Solid-state hard drives will make your computer work a lot faster as well as make it more enjoyable to use. An awful lot faster, to be sure.

How do I speed up my machine? By adding an SSD
How do I speed up my machine? By adding an SSD
Standard Hard Disk Drive
Solid State drive

Firstly, it’s amazing the number of computers supplied today where the processor CPU is not really up to the job. Obviously, this isn’t the fault of the customer because most people don’t know the difference in which processor is better than another. This is, of course, the fault of manufacturers. I know these computers are always built to a price but really manufactures? In my opinion, it just seems that they are trying to make the most amount of money for correspondingly, the least work.

Anyway, rant about manufacturers over.

As I was saying an SSD,  (solid-state drive) is a lot quicker than HDD, (hard disk drive). Look at this video below where I’ve taken two machines one with an SSD and the other with a normal standard HDD and press the power button at the same time. You can see how comparatively quicker the SSD machine boots. In this case, 16 seconds. Also, it’s not just the booting time. Indeed, files and documents load quicker. And programs, of course, load quicker. In fact, everything.

How do I speed up my Machine – effects of an SSD

In the first place, it’s the same system. Identically the same computer and the same boot sequence. Indeed, all I have done is clone the data from the old HDD to a SSD.

Which is exactly what I would do for you.

If you live in the Sussex / Surrey area and want me a correspondingly quicker machine with a Solid State Drive, call me on 07771 588577 or Email.

At the bottom of this page is another video showing an even more drastic improvement of nearly a minute quicker. An SSD Upgrade was coupled with an upgrade to Windows 10. Scroll down to see it.

Below, is a table with the advantages and disadvantages of a Solid State Drive. The only real disadvantage, however, is that they cost slightly more.

Attribute
SSD
HDD
Power DrawDraws less power and an average of 2 to 3 W of electricityMore power draw an average of 6 to 7 W of electricity
NoiseNo moving parts, therefore, no soundClicks, whirring and spinning can be heard
VibrationNo moving parts, therefore no vibrationThe disc (platter) spinning can produce vibration
CostSSD’s are, indeed, more expensiveStore a lot of data cheaply
Heat producedLower power draw and no moving parts mean,of course, very little heat producedWhile not that significant it produces more heat than an SSD and can contribute to machine overheating
File opening speedUp to 30% faster than the standard HDDSlower than an SSD
Operating system boot timeAverage 10 to 15 seconds on a new machineAverage 30 to 45 seconds

This is a video showing a Solid State Drive Upgrade together with a Windows 10 Upgrade. It really speeds up the machine not to mention giving it a new lease of life. It was combined with an upgrade to 10 because when the video was shot, October 2019, there was only a few months of life left for Windows 7. The computer itself has an Intel I3 processor and 6gb of RAM in it. That remained and likewise, just the Operating System and the Hard Drive were upgraded.

How do I speed up my machine? – The Cost

But it is not as expensive as you would think and will give your machine a new lease of life. Give me a call on (07771) 588577 or email me so we can discuss it further. Cost, of course, depends on how much data you have as to the size of the solid-state drive you require. However, the labour cost is the same it’s only the drive price that varies.

Solid State Drive SSD
How do I speed up my machine? A SSD

Why not treat yourself to a new and faster SSD and make your computer a pleasure to use again! And of course, you can stop asking yourself How do I speed up my Machine!

Data Protection

All old hard drives are either returned to you or are help for 2 weeks and then destroyed in line with our data protection policy.

Upgrade to Windows 10

Upgrade to Windows 10

 Email us     07771 588577     Whatsapp

Upgrade to Windows 10 – Support for Windows 7 has ended. That means no more security updates… You should have been notified about this by your computer in a message on the screen. Depending on the message you see, it says something along the lines of:

upgrade to windows 10 - windows 7 end
upgrade to windows 10 – windows 7 end

Or something like;

upgrade to windows 10 - windows 7 end
upgrade to windows 10 – windows 7 end

Many people will then ask “How do I know which version of Windows I am running?” If your computer start button (bottom left) looks like the one below, it is probably Windows 7.

upgrade to windows 10 - windows 7 end
upgrade to windows 10 – windows 7 end
Windows 7 start button
Windows 7 start button

What is this ‘support’

14 January 2020 was the last day that Microsoft will offer security updates and technical support for computers running Windows 7. It’s the security update aspect of this message which is of most concern. This means that Microsoft won’t be offering any security updates to fix any bugs in Windows 7. Windows 7 has been out a while now and is not as secure as the latest version of Windows.

Certainly, most of the computers affected by the Wannacry Ransomware attack that hit the NHS in 2017 were running Windows 7. And now with support ending for Windows 7, it will be even more vulnerable. As when Windows XP support finished, it means you shouldn’t carry out anything financial (shopping, online banking etc) on your PC after the end date.

Computer help in sussex

Why should I upgrade?

The short answer is, staying with Windows 7 is less secure and more vulnerable to Viruses and Malware.

So, what are my options?

In brief, you can upgrade. Or not.

That means that Microsoft would like you to upgrade to Windows 10. Because, and it is a demonstrable fact, it is definitely more secure than Windows 7. Windows 10 is now a popular choice and there are now more computers running Windows 10 than running Windows 7. Indeed, Windows 10 is now running on more than 800 million devices worldwide.

However, as human beings, we tend to be a little bit resistant to change!

And, that is why some people don’t like it. Also, it usually takes a couple of weeks to get used to it. I remember when people said they didn’t like it when changing from Windows 98 to Windows XP. Also, people didn’t like the change from Windows XP to Windows 7! And my money is on people saying the same thing whenever the next upgrade comes along!

Indeed, the average life span of a computer is 3-5 years. I know, unbelievably short! It’s here if you fancy some depressive reading! To be fair, I still go to a Windows 98 computer to service it! The old saying, they don’t make them like that any more is still so true! However, we used to pay a lot more for computers. My first computer in 1985 cost £300. that is when £300 meant something! Inflation-adjusted, that is about £900 in today’s terms…

But apart from the look of Windows 10 it still operates in basically the same way as Windows 7.

I have upgraded many, many people to Windows 10 this year. Thanks to the messages appearing on peoples computers. Usually, after a while, it becomes a case of ‘what was I worried about?’ On an upgrade to Windows 10, the majority of your icons on your desktop/start screen will still look the same and function exactly as before.

Windows 10 upgrade
What an upgrade to Windows 10 looks like

Depending on your Windows 7 system it may be a case that you can just upgrade your operating system to the new Windows 10 without having to buy a new computer. You can run the Windows 10 compatibility tool on your current system to find out if there will be any problems. It can be downloaded from here. Then you can download the upgrade from the Microsoft website and upgrade your PC. But don’t forget to back up your data first as it can go wrong! It’s probably best to make a clone of your hard drive on a spare hard drive so you can go back to how your computer was, exactly.

Upgrade to Windows 10

Of course, you may not feel comfortable doing the upgrade yourself. Truly, nobody is born with the knowledge of how to do this, it is all a learning process. And for me, that is what makes computers fun, learning something new each day! But not everyone has the time or inclination to learn something new.

That’s where somebody like me comes in useful. When I upgrade customers to Windows 10, I make a clone (an exact copy) of their hard drive before doing anything. That way, if something goes wrong in the upgrade procedure, nothing is lost.

Good Example

Just today, I had a call from a customer saying the upgrade had gone wrong (someone else had done it for her). Her problem was that when it reverted back to Windows 7, her ‘Windows Live Mail‘ was not working. I had to give her the bad news that as Microsoft don’t make it anymore, it can’t be re-installed. (click the Windows Live Mail link for more information)

To make it clear, the reason it probably failed to upgrade was insufficient disk space on the computer, I gauged this from what she said on the phone. It doesn’t usually go wrong. But I believe ‘plan for the worst and it will never happen’!

It’s for these reasons I make a clone of the existing hard drive. I always tell people it is an overnight job, sometimes 24 hours, as to make the clone and then to upgrade the PC to Windows 10, does take a while. Because it is done at the workshop, it is priced at a job rate, usually £80. Whilst, they may sound a lot, it comes with security.

No data loss, the job done well, and a guided tour of Windows 10 after. Yes, I’ll show you around Windows 10 and answer any questions you may have. I know, not at all like PC World or Currys!

That being said most people doing the upgrade to Windows 10 have no problems, it goes through fine. But doing it is highly recommended by Microsoft.

Other upgrades

We perform all sorts of Hardware and Software upgrades for your computer. Below is a video showing an upgrade to Windows 10 with a Solid State Drive Upgrade. By combining an Upgrade to Windows 10 and a Solid State Drive Upgrade we gave the old computer in the video a new lease of life and a huge speed boost!

If this all sounds like too much hassle to do it yourself, call me on 07771 588577 or Email Me, and I can do it all for you, I can perform your upgrade to Windows 10 safely, securely, with no data loss.

Testimonials.

Home CCTV and Smart Cameras

Home CCTV and Smart Cameras.

Call 07771 588577 or email us.

What if I told you you could have a smart, effective Home CCTV and Smart Cameras solution for about £30 per camera? All of the cameras link to an app that would email you photos when a movement was detected without any subscription fees? This is totally possible, I’ve done it myself…

Echo Dot Smart Device and Camera
Echo Dot Smart Device and Camera which is also smart plug controlled

Some CCTV companies and vendor’s charge a subscription for their service. Some cameras have a memory card inside them so if the thieves steal the camera as well you cannot see the pictures. Whereas this system emails you a selection of photos when movement is detected on the camera without charge. It uses standard email protocol to send you the pictures direct to your email account so you can view them on your computer, tablet or phone…

Sounds too good to be true, right?

But it isn’t. Let me take you through the system I use, using Dlink cameras.

[one-half]Home CCTV and Smart Cameras[/one-half]

[one-half]Home CCTV and Smart Cameras external[/one-half]

These are the two models of camera that I use. For those of a technical bent, the internal ones are DCS-932LB1 and the external one is a DCS-2670L. So, now we have established what cameras I use, the big question is:

But what is the quality of the picture?

[one-third]Home CCTV and Smart Cameras app screenshot[/one-third]

[one-third]Home CCTV and Smart Camerascamera screenshot[/one-third]

[one-third]Internal Picture[/one-third]

[one-third]External Picture[/one-third]

[divider style=”empty” margin_top=”10px” margin_bottom=”10px”]

And the pictures are good quality! Here is an enlargement of the external shot with yours truly. Certainly enough to pick me out of a line up of suspects!

Home CCTV and Smart Cameras external close up
Home CCTV and Smart Cameras external close up

Not bad considering the price? Of course, you’ll notice the date and time stamp in the picture of the external camera. The external camera is more expensive but the internal ones more than hold their own in terms of picture quality. Also, as each email has its own timestamp when it is sent to you, you’ll know when it was taken.

How easy is the App to use?

In the above three photos, the first one is of the app. The D-link app is very user-friendly and you just tap on the camera to see what’s happening. In our installation, we set up the app for you and give you a guided tour on how to use it. We can also set up the email notifications for you. Just switch on the cameras as you leave the house. I use an Alexa echo to do it. That’s it!

How hard are the cameras to set up?

Setting the cameras up is a fairly easy proposition if you have an understanding of basic Wi-Fi settings. But if you don’t and, let’s not be coy about this, not everybody does, that’s where I come in. If you’re looking for a cheap CCTV set up in either South Surrey or Sussex let me know on either (07771) 588577 or email. That way we can discuss how many cameras you need and the total cost involved. Then I’d visit, set it all up for you, install the app on your smartphone, set up email and you all good to go.

Of course, it won’t stop people breaking into your house if they are hard of thinking! But you will get them on CCTV.

Of course, most thieves seeing the CCTV cameras will hopefully think twice before breaking in.

After all, there are easier targets than a house with a CCTV system.

Where can I use the Home CCTV and Smart Cameras?

Practically anywhere as long as you have a Wi-Fi signal and a power supply.

[one-third]Home CCTV and Smart Cameras kitchen screenshot[/one-third]

Of course, they have infrared to and can see in the dark, as in the middle picture of a darkened garage.

Can I link them to my Alexa or smart home?

Yes, by using smart plugs you can tell Alexa to switch the cameras on as you leave the house and turn them off when you get back. For full details of our Smart Home installation service see Smart Device Set Up. Below is my own set up for my sunroom. I have cameras on every access point to the house and in the below picture you can see an Amazon Echo dot hidden in the foliage next to the camera. The camera is more visible, after all, it is a deterrent!

If you are looking to get your smart device set up in Sussex or South Surrey we can do that for you.

What is a Smart Device?

A smart device is something that you interact with which will then carry out an action in your home. This can range from turning on lights via voice command to adjusting the temperature in your home when you are away from it.

What do Smart Devices do?

Smart devices are becoming wider-ranging in their applications. For example, you can now get robot vacuum cleaners (I use a Roomba) that you can control by your voice,  Smart plugs which can turn on any electrical device plugged into a three-pin socket, and security cameras that turn on by voice command when you leave the house.

In fact,

  • light bulbs,
  • thermostats,
  • printers,
  • radios,
  • weather stations
  • vacuum cleaners

and even water valves that you can turn on with your voice to water your garden. And while you’re in your garden you can have a robotic lawnmower to mow your grass.

The devices are fairly easy to set up but if you have trouble, that’s what we’re there for, to help set up your smart home devices in West Sussex, South Surrey and surrounding areas.

What do I need for Smart Device Set Up?

The one thing you need to run your smart devices is Wi-Fi in your home. Once your home has good Wi-Fi coverage reaching every room, you can install all manner of smart home devices and automate your life.

The market leader is Amazon. Their Alexa range of smart devices powers a whole host of things. Everything in the above list and more. Personally, this is the range I use to automate my house. I find it handy to turn lights on and off from anywhere in the house. Also to know my weather and news in the morning and also to tell me what the traffic is like on the roads.

If you fancy having a smart device in your house but don’t know where to start, call (07771) 588577 today can get you started on your home automation.

Lighting

By combining different items like the Amazon Alexa with lights it can make your life easier. We are familiar with the Phillips Hue range of bulbs and smart accessories.

Hue Smart Switch Smart Device Set up
Philips Hue Smart Wireless Dimmer Switch is an accessory for the Hue Lighting System. Requiring no installation, only connection to your wireless network, this smart wireless dimmer switch can turn your lights on and off or dim and brighten them. The advantage of this which is it can be placed anywhere. As a requires no wiring, it’s ideal for putting by the sofa or anywhere else that makes it more convenient for you. The Philips Hue system is compatible with many home automation systems including Amazon, Google, Apple, Nest, Samsung, and a few others.

This is a Philips Hue wireless motion sensor. Like motion sensors for outdoor lights, this one works indoors and simply turns on the light in the room as you walk in. Because it’s battery-powered it requires no wires or installation and is connected to your lighting system via your home Wi-Fi network. It can be placed anywhere inside your Wi-Fi network including hallways, bathrooms, kitchens in fact anywhere else you want to save money. It includes a light sensor and detects when rooms are vacant and automatically turns off the light. Convenient and eco-friendly.
The technical name for this is a Philips Hue personal wireless Wi-Fi lighting home automation bridge! But mainly people just call it a bridge. This requires a power source and an ethernet connection to your Wi-Fi network. What this does is control all the above devices and bulbs. It’s the heart and the brain of the Philips system allowing you to control all your devices via the app or voice control.

Why Should I Have Smart Devices?

First and foremost, they make life easier. And who doesn’t want an easy life?

So many automated home appliances are available these days, with more and more coming out regularly. It seems fairly clear this is the way that things are going. And perhaps it’s best to be in on the ground floor in using and understanding these devices…give one a try and if you need help we can do your Smart Device Set Up.

Unless you are unlucky, we will all get old and chances are automation will be far more common then than it is now, so knowing how to work with smart devices may be a big plus when it comes to ordering a large glass of wine in the nursing home!
